Protecting From Digital Screens

Digital eye strain is a growing problem in our world today, no matter a person’s age. While digital devices help us in many ways, they also have the potential to damage our eyes and vision if we’re not protecting them properly.

At Perry & Morgan EyeCare, we want to help patients with eye care not just when they come into our practice, but in their everyday lives. Learn how to identify digital eye strain and what you can do to limit its effects on your eyes.

Digital Eye Strain Symptoms

While digital eye strain might start small, it can quickly grow to become irritating and potentially cause other problems. If you’re dealing with some common symptoms, it’s important pay attention and take proper steps to protect your eyes.

Common digital eye strain symptoms include:

  • Headaches
  • Shoulder or neck pain
  • Dry eyes
  • Blurred vision

How to Reduce Digital Eye Strain

With the importance of digital devices, you likely aren’t able to cut screen time out altogether. However, there are still ways you can help protect your eyes and limit the strain they’re experiencing every day, hopefully minimizing your symptoms.

20-20-20 Rule

The 20-20-20 rule is an easy, quick, and effective way to give your eyes a much-needed break when viewing digital screens.

Every 20 minutes of screen time, take a 20-second break by looking at an object at least 20 feet away. Even though the break is short, this time helps your eyes reset from staring at a screen.

When spending time on your digital devices, there are easy adjustments you can make to reduce the strain on your eyes. Overall, these will help your eyes and vision.

Try the following when you’re on a computer:

  • Blink often
  • Position your monitor just below eye level
  • Enlarge the screen text
  • Don’t sit in spaces too dark or too bright

Safely Using Digital Devices

The importance of digital devices is only continuing to grow. To protect your eye health and vision, it’s important to take the right steps when spending time on screens. If you have more questions about how to properly use digital devices, we’re happy to answer them!
